Our guide to what’s on at the weekend

There’s lots of live music around the county this weekend.

A great example is People Power in Dunamaise Arts Center Friday night is an excellent mix of talent and community working together for an amazing night out, please support if you can.

The Ballyfin Players has an original play running in Mountmellick Arts Centre Friday and Saturday night and it promises to deliver an entertaining show.

Liverpool fans are in for a big treat Sunday night with The Anfield Wrap Live in Kavanagh’s Bar and Venue. Finally, there is of course lots to do outdoors with walks and guided tours.

THURSDAY MARCH 21

Biodiversity Talk, Local Wildlife – getting closer and getting the shot
Ever want to build a wildlife hide to observe local and native wildlife? Kevin McCann did just that and has been rewarded with wonderful photos and experiences.

This event is hosted by The Irish Wildlife Trust Laois/Offaly Branch in Mueller & O’Connell Bakery Abbeyleix at 8pm. Come see Kevin’s photos and hear his stories and pick up a few tips.

FRIDAY MARCH 22

People Power
Organised by Fionn Marum in aid of a number of charities, featuring an array of local musical talent, this promises to be a great night’s entertainment.

Young people in Portlaoise are coming together on the Dunamaise stage to make a positive impact in our local community and abroad, for the greater good. C

Come along to help them to make a difference and enjoy a great night out.

All proceeds on the night will be shared between the following charities; The Cuisle Centre, Kolbe School and Nakhon Si Thammarat Home for Boys (Thailand).

Tickets are only €10 and it’s a great excuse to get out on a Friday night.

The Enterprise – Live Theatre
This year’s offering from Frances Harney and Ballyfin Players is “The Enterprise”.

This is a fast paced comedy with a wide range of characters that offer great fun for all the family.

The play runs over two nights on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 beginning at 7.30pm each night in the Mountmellick Art Centre.

Tickets are just €10 and are available on the door. All proceeds go to two local community groups, Ballyfin Athletic Club and Ballyfin Ladies GAA, so enjoy a great night out while supporting local clubs!

Table Quiz
We love our table quizzes in Laois so why not try your hand at this one Friday night. It will be held in the Rock Inn on the Old Dublin Road at 9pm.

Entry is €5 per person and it’s all in aid of Laois Diabetic Support Group.

IE/DC –Live Music
IE/DC one of Ireland’s best tribute AC/DC tribute bands plays Kavanagh’s Bar and Venue this weekend. A rocking night is guaranteed.

SATURDAY MARCH 23

Special Brew
Colm Kavanagh’s Headbangers Night presents Special Brew – A SKA Tribute. Get your Saturday night rocking! Tickets are just €9 and the gig begins at 10pm.

SUNDAY MARCH 24

Wedding Showcase – Midlands Park Hotel
Midlands Park Hotel is hosting their Spring Wedding Showcase.

Come along and check out this lovely venue and see the newly renovated and designed ballroom with uplighting, mood lit ceiling and fairy lit backdrop and so much more. The fair runs from 1pm-5pm.

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk
The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is Spring Equinox Forest Walk.

This walk is a Grade C 8km walk and takes 3 hours so is suited for most walkers.

Meeting point is at Forest entrance, Clonaslee Village at 3pm. €5 per walk or €20 annual membership (€30 for family).

Donaghmore Workhouse and Agricultural Museum Guided Tour
Trudy from Experiencing Laois will give an entertaining and informative tour of one of Ireland’s few remaining Famine Workhouses in Ireland.

Enjoy a cuppa and a chat at the end of the tour. Adults are €5 and children go free. The tour begins at 2pm in Donaghmore Workhouse and tickets can be booked online here.

The Anfield Wrap Live
The Anfield Wrap shares the experience of supporting Liverpool FC and they are coming to Portlaoise.

At this show you can expect a lively chat about The Reds, a very active Q&A and quiz involving the audience with live music afterwards.

Tickets are €17 and the gig begins at 8pm and is not to be missed by any Liverpool fans.
