Portlaoise Panthers star Claire Melia has shown what talent, aided by hard-work and determination can do, as she sets off for America on a prestigious basketball scholarship.
Claire, who was on this year’s Irish U20 team, is heading to St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
What makes this feat even more incredible is the fact that Melia, came back from a cruciate injury last year to earn her place in the American university programme.
Melia is extremely well-known in basketball circles throughout Ireland. She captained Ireland U-18 to the European Championship final in 2017 and led Portlaoise Panthers to their National Cup final this Sunday.
The Monasterevin native eats , sleeps and breathes basketball, and this was expressed by Portlaoise Panthers chairperson Seamus Dooley when talking about the exceptional Post player.
“We really wish Claire all the best. We have great memories of her here in the club from under 12 right up to senior and we’re thrilled for her.
“We’re delighted that she’s heading onto the next step now, obviously we’re disappointed not to have her here but at the same time we are delighted for her after all the work and time she has put in,” said Seamus.
Bon voyage to Claire Melia as she travels to St Joseph’s Uni in Philadelphia. We are going to miss her so much. We look forward to following your progress in the USA Claire, the very best of luck from all @plaoisepanthers thanks for everything….who is cutting those onions 😢😢 pic.twitter.com/eIGlz2rCOf
