Mountrath are through to a Laois SHC ‘A’ quarter-final after a hard-fought victory over Clonaslee in O’Moore Park this evening.
The big turning point being the red card given to Glenn McEvoy mid-way through the second-half with Clonaslee now facing a relegation playoff after three successive losses.
Also, five points in succession at the beginning of the second-half set Mountrath up for the victory.
The game began with both side’s trying to settle in. Jimmy Hyland slotted over a free to begin the game’s scoring.
Ger Reilly pointed from play before Reilly raised a green flag. After a scrappy passage of play, the ball dropped kindly for him to blast the ball beyond Dan Russell in the Mountrath goal.
The goal gave Clonaslee the boost they needed and two scores in succession settled them into the game. Two frees from Liam Senior giving them 1-3 on the scoreboard after 15 minutes.
Hyland pointed his second free to stop the Clonaslee surge. Senior fired over a 65′ before James Fahy scored a superb point from half-back.
Diarmuid Conroy opened his account with a score from play. Hyland fired over his third free to leave four between the sides.
Mountrath began to get into a good rhythm and fired over another three scores to get right back into the game.
Colm Linehan scored a peach of an effort off the left before Hyland got his first from play. Mick Meade pointed a great score to leave one between the sides.
Senior pointed a free from his own 65-yard line to ensure his side went in with a two-point advantage at the break with the scoreline at 1-6 to 0-7.
Mountrath came out with fire in their bellies and rattled off five scores without reply at the beginning of the second half.
Hyland pointing three frees before Linehan and Gavin Sydes scored superb points from play.
Clonaslee were then reduced to 14 men after Glenn McEvoy was given his marching orders for a wild swing on the arm of a Mountrtah player.
The red card ignited the Clonaslee flame once again as they rattled off four scores without reply. Tommy Tynan and Patrick Hyland firing between the posts.
A free from Senior and a stunning score from Bob Downey put Clonaslee back in front again.
Hyland pointed a placed ball to stop the Clonaslee scoring rampage before a wonderful score from Gavin Sydes put Mountrath in front once again.
Hyland got his first score from play before a free from Senior set up a thrilling ending to the game with only one point between the sides.
Clonaslee couldn’t find the leveller and will now contest the relegation final while Mountrath have secured their quarter-final place.
