Rosenallis 2-14 Portlaoise 0-5
Laois Shopping Centre Intermediate Championship Semi Final

2016 Junior champions Rosenallis have an Intermediate football final to look forward to after they defeated Portlaoise in O’Moore Park this evening.

Paddy Dunne’s charges will now take on neighbours Clonaslee in the decider on Saturday September 29 for a place in the 2020 Senior Football championship.

This was one way traffic right from the off as Rosenallis started like a train and Portlaoise just couldn’t compete with them.

It took the Town 18 minutes to score and by that stage, Rosenallis had six points on the board – all of them from play.

Cillian Callally, Mark Dunne, Ronan Murray and Brian Fitzpatrick were among the scorers in that period where, without Portlaoise keeper Richard Downey’s interventions, it could have been even worse.

He made three point blank saves in the opening quarter, twice from Ronan Murray and another from Donnagh Callally, to keep Portlaoise somewhat within touch.

They finally opened their account via Jonathan Rafter and then quickly added a second via substitute John Kavanagh.

But Portlaoise wouldn’t score again as Eoin Dunne blasted over two super points from distance while Ronan Murray chipped in with two frees to leave Rosenallis 0-10 to 0-2 ahead at the break.

Rosenallis picked up from where they left off on the resumption of play as Brian Fitzpatrick and Ronan Murray extended their lead before they put the game to bed by the 40th minute.

John Lennon’s run cut open the Portlaoise defence and he fed the ball to Ronan Murray who slipped the ball beyond Downey in the goals.

Brian Smyth responded with Portlaoise’s third point but Rosenallis made it 2-12 to 0-3 after 45 minutes when Mark Dunne’s long range effort was fumbled by keeper Downey and Brian Fitzpatrick nipped in to score.

From there – it was a case of playing down time for both teams as Rosenallis prevailed by 15 points in the end.
