Huge Laois involvement as IT Carlow, DCU and UCD reach Sigerson Cup semis

Sigerson Cup

There was huge Laois involvement today as IT Carlow, DCU and UCD won their respective quarter finals to reach the last four of the Sigerson Cup.

Ballylinan’s Gary Walsh led the way for UCD as they once again required extra time to get the better of Ulster opponents.

Walsh lodged over four points in the first half as the Dublin college led 0-6 to 1-1 at the break against St Mary’s.

However, St Mary’s battled back in the second half but Walsh’s fifth point left three in it as the game entered injury time.

However, Matthew McGleenan stepped up with a goal to force extra time with the score reading 2-4 to 0-10.

Nevertheless, the Ballylinan forward, who recently returned to the Laois panel, popped up with an extra time goal as UCD triumphed by four in the end.

They will now go forward to meet rivals DCU in the semi final after they enjoyed a huge win over Queens.

O’Dempsey’s Mark Barry was a second half substitute as they won out 7-14 to 0-9 in the end.

Meanwhile, in the other quarter final, a Pat Critchley managed IT Carlow continued to upset the odds as they defeated Munster opponents for the second weekend running.

After their thrilling win over IT Tralee, reigning champions UCC were the visitors today where they were once again sent packing.

And after outsmarting Kieran Donaghy last week, Portlaoise’s Critchley had the measure of former All-Ireland winning manager Billy Morgan today.

With Graiguecullen’s Trevor Collins, Park-Ratheniska’s Richie Hitchcock and Killeshin’s Evan Lowry in their ranks, they won by four points in the end.

Lowry popped up with 1-2 in a 3-9 to 0-14 win and they will face Michael Murphy’s Letterkenny IT in the semi final on Wednesday.
