Famous Irish Musician Sharon Shannon visited the Abbeyleix South National School recently.
Third and fourth class students had just finished
an extensive study of some of her best-known tunes.
They followed up on this study by writing to the musician herself.
Mrs. Wallace, teacher of third and fourth class received the news on Saturday January 11 that Sharon had offered to come to meet
the pupils, play for them and answer any questions they may have.
Sharon arrived with her manager, Anne at the school on Friday January 17.
The children congregated on the school avenue with handmade banners to welcome her.
They then moved to the G.P Hall where all classes had the opportunity to play instruments with her.
Students in the school who are members of Spink Comhaltas
played alongside Sharon also.
Pupils from Third and Fourth Class, who wrote the letters that captured her attention were then lucky enough to have a questions and answers session with the world renowned performer.
Principal, Ruth Wallace, a longtime fan said ”This was an opportunity of a lifetime for our school community.
“We were truly blessed to have had such a wonderfully gifted musician in our midst.
“She brought such happiness to our day, with her beaming smile, her immense warmth, her caring nature, her sincerity and her wonderful talent.
“She touched our hearts and we will never forget it.”
Alf Harvey was there to capture the wonderful day.
