Portlaoise boxer TJ Doheny set to return to the ring in March

Portlaoise boxer TJ ‘The Power’ Doheny is set to return to the ring in March.

The former super-bantamweight World Champion will be in action in Dubai on Friday March 6.

TJ will face the until-recently unheralded Romanian Ionut Baluta (12-2, 2KOs) on an MTK card at Caesars Palace Bluewaters.

Back in April 2019, Doheny suffered his only professional loss to date in a unification clash with Danny Roman.

But he then bounced back in October last year by defeating Jesus Martinez of Colombia, after five rounds on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight debut.

Before that, ‘The Power’ Doheny successfully defended his belt against Ryohei Takahashi in Madison Square Garden, New York.

The Knockmay man became IBF Junior Featherweight Champion of the world last August, becoming the 21st Irish world champion and only the second ever Irishman after Jimmy McLarnin in 1933 to attain champion status without ever having fought on his native soil.

It was an accolade so great that Laois County Council bestowed on him their highest honour possible – a full civic reception.

Looking ahead to March, ‘The Power’, who is promoted by Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, will seek to dust off some cobwebs next month before launching another world-title assault later in the year.
