Costa Coffee and Subway set to close stores in Ireland and UK due to Coronavirus

Following on from the news that McDonalds is to close its doors, two other food chains have done the same.

Costa Coffee and Subway, who both have branches in Portlaoise, will shut their doors from 5pm this evening – Monday March 23.

Costa Coffee, who only opened a chain in Lismard Business Park last year and have another store in Laois Shopping Centre, announced the news on Twitter.

CEO Jill McDonald said they were taking the decision to support social distancing measures.

Meanwhile sandwich chain Subway also announced they would be shutting all of their stores.

They have two in Portlaoise – one in James Fintan Lawlor Avenue and another in the Midway.

The company said in a statement: “We want to to do everything in our power to protect our loyal guests, dedicated Franchise Owners and amazing Sandwich Artists.

“So, for that reason, we have authorised all our Franchise Owners to close their stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland from 5pm today (23, March 2020), until further notice.

“We believe this is the best thing to help support social distancing and keep everyone as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

“However, many of our Franchise Owners are continuing to support the nation’s frontline workers in their amazing efforts, by donating food responsibly, over the next few days.”
