A protest march over the closure of Portlaoise Leisure Centre has been organised for Monday June 22.

The march will begin at the leisure centre at 10am and protesters are asked to march from there to Laois County Council.

Laois Water Safety are in support of this protest which has been organised by the staff of Portlaoise Leisure Centre.

Secretary John Oxley said: “The committee of Laois Water Safety would like to show their support towards Portlaoise Leisure Centre for their continued operation against their closure.

“This Centre plays a vital part in the development and training of everyone in Laois for safety in the water.

“The staff and management there have been a great help to us over the past 40 years.”

Due to financial difficulties, it was confirmed earlier this week that Portlaoise Leisure Centre would not reopen again.

Instead, is to close with immediate effect with the loss of 30 jobs. News of this has been met with widespread shock and sadness.

Hundreds of people have taken to social media since to voice their displeasure with the decision and also, a petition has been created.
