Portarlington youngster nominated for Republic of Ireland Women’s U-16 Player of the Year Award

A second Laois teenager has been nominated for a very prestigious international award.

Portarlington’s Della Doherty has been shortlisted with two others for the Republic of Ireland Women’s U-16 Player of the Year Award.

She is the second Laois player to be nominated as Portlaoise’s Colin Conroy is also in for the Men’s U-16 award.

A prolific gaelic footballer who has played for Laois, Doherty plays for Peamount United in Dublin.

The Colaiste Iosagain student, who previously played for Arlington AFC, plays as a centre back.

She is up against Aoife Horgan and Kellyanne Browne for the award.

Doherty, along with Clonaslee youngster Emily Corbet, are both on the Republic of Ireland team that reached the Elite Phase of the European Championship Qualifiers.

They were due to play Denmark, Serbia and Austria in a tournament in March in order to reach this finals tournament in Sweden which was to be played in the summer. But Covid-19 cancelled all of that.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the Awards ceremony was originally postponed from earlier this year and will not take place due to social distancing protocols remaining in place.

This is the 30th year of the Awards and celebrates the performances of players in the previous international season.

The ‘Hall of Fame’ and ‘Special Merit’ recipients will be announced next week along with the winners of each category.
