New superintendent appointed to Laois as Petit ends three year stay

A new superintendent has been appointed to Portlaoise Garda Station.

John Lawless has come to Laois after being previously assigned to Birr Garda District back in July.

He was previously attached to the Westmeath division and has been replaced in Birr by Colin Furlong.

Superintendent Lawless takes over from Anthony Petit who has been in the role since 2017.

The Wexford native arrived to Laois three years ago after being transferred to the midlands from Waterford.

However, he is heading back closer to home after being transferred back to Waterford.

According to recent figures, there are now 386 gardaí in the Laois and Offaly Division.

While Limerick native John Scanlon remains as Chief Superintendent.
