Appeal for witnesses following accident which saw arrest and person airlifted to hospital

Gardai in Laois have revealed they have arrested one person following a crash in the county yesterday.

The accident happened around 10am on Thursday morning on the N77 on the Abbeyleix side of Portlaoise just a short distance after Junction 17.

Gardai, ambulances and a helicopter attended the scene and Gardai are seeking for any witnesses to come forward.

They said: “Laois Roads Policing Unit are investigating a serious Road Traffic Collision on the N77 outside Portlaoise on Thursday.

“The driver of a HGV has been charged to appear before Portlaoise District Court.

“One person was airlifted to hospital following this incident.

“If anyone witnessed this collision or has dashcam footage which may be of assistance they can contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 0578674100.

“The scene was attended by regular unit and Laois Roads Policing Unit and were greatly assisted by Laois Fire Service, National Ambulance Service, and Army Air Corp.

“Frontline workers working together.”
