Laois Gardai bring charges after man ‘armed with a hammer’ threatens staff and robs shop

Laois Gardai arrested and charged a man following a harrowing incident in a Portlaoise shop.

Last Friday, a man armed with a hammer, entered a shop in the town and threatened staff.

He eventually fled the scene with a sum of money and a quantity of tobacco.

On Tuesday, Gardai carried out a search where they discovered significant evidence in relation to the case.

Today, Gardai arrested a man and charged him with a number of offences relating to the robbery.

He was brought before Portlaoise District Court where he was remanded in custody.

Laois Gardai said: “On the 15th January 2021, a male entered a shop in Portlaoise town armed with a hammer.

“The male threatened staff and demanded money and tobacco before fleeing the scene with a sum of cash and tobacco.

“On the 20th January 2021, a search was carried out during the course of which evidence relevant to the investigation was located and seized.

“On the 21st January 2021, a male was charged with a number of offences related to this Robbery and remanded in custody at Portlaoise District Court.

“Thank you to the public for your assistance.”
