Met Eireann issue snow warning for Laois as accumulations expected

Met Eireann have issued a snow/ice warning for almost all of Ireland, including Laois, for Thursday.

Up to now, it had been unclear whether Thursday would bring rain or snow but the national forecaster has now predicted the latter.

This warning comes into effect at 8am on Thursday and lasts for 24 hours.

They say: “We have issued a Snow/Ice warning for Munster, Connacht and Leinster.

“A band of sleet and snow spreading northeastwards during Thursday giving snow accumulations of up to 5cm in some areas (higher over the mountains).

“But it will transition to rain in the west and south on Thursday night.”

The snow arrived in parts of the country yesterday – but none so far in Laois.

Parts of Monaghan, Roscommon, Cavan, Dublin and Meath saw significant snowfall overnight with Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Westmeath all forecast to see accumulations of snow today.

Treacherous conditions have been caused by very cold temperatures in low single figures by day and with sharp or severe frosts and icy patches at night.

Showers of sleet and snow are expected in the eastern half of the country today and tomorrow, which will lead to hazardous conditions with roads and paths, Met Éireann have said.

Temperatures are set to remain near freezing throughout today while it is forecast to dip as low as -5C tonight in some counties.
