There was a big win for a Laois trainer and an owner with strong Laois connections in Clonmel yesterday.
The 4.35pm Rosegreen Handicap Chase went to West Is Best – trained by The Heath based Billy Lanigan.
This was Mr Lanigan’s first winner of the season and the horse bolted up at odds of 7/1.
West Is Best is owned by a man called Hugh Laing.
Mr Laing was formerly a detective in Laois but is now a property developer based in London.
Speaking to IrishRacing.com, trainer Lanigan praised jockey Danny Mullins for giving the horse a great ride.
He said: “He’s owned by a great friend of mine Hugh Laing and that’s his second win for us.
“Danny gave him a great ride and came out for the better ground.
“He’s a very lucky rider for us and he’s the thinking man’s jockey.
“He handles that ground. He had a bit of trouble with his muscles but we seem to have got him right now.
“We bred him ourselves and have more of the family at home.
“We’ll probably look for something around St Patricks Day maybe at Limerick.”
Trainer Billy will be hoping for more success next week as the fancied Shantou Sisu is entered into two races on Tuesday at the Tipperary track.
