Laois hurlers learn opponents as All Ireland Qualifier draw made

The Laois hurlers will face Waterford in Round 1 of the All-Ireland Hurling Qualifiers following this morning’s draw on RTE Radio 1.

This game is scheduled to take place this weekend in a neutral venue – with details to be confirmed by the GAA later today.

The other Round 1 game will be between Clare and Wexford with Cork and Galway given byes to Round 2.

Waterford, who reached last year’s All Ireland final, were beaten in the Munster quarter-final by Clare three weeks ago. The last Laois-Waterford game was in 2014 when Waterford were 2-22 to 1-15 winners.

Laois reached this stage following a dramatic encounter with Antrim on Saturday.

Cheddar Plunkett’s men had lost every game they played this year but two Paddy Purcell goals, one in either half, proved crucial as they pulled off a great win.

They had to play for the final 20 minutes of the game with 14 men and see an 11-point lead almost evaporate but they managed to hold on and a strong final quarter saw them win 2-27 to 2-21.
