SOLAS – Farmers’ Market back this Saturday in Portarlington

Solas Eco Garden Centre

The farmers’ market at SOLAS Eco Garden Centre in Portarlington is back this weekend after the Christmas break.

Co-owner David Maher explains: “We are excited to be back with our first Farmers Market of the year this Saturday (January 8) from 10am to 2pm.

“We are starting with our core stalls taking part including our vegetable growers, fresh meat supplier, bakery, honey and local artist Mary Butler and food stall ‘Refillz Zero Waste’ will be present will an array of heathy packaging free products to start the new year.

“Also award winning chef Nathan Diamond is back with ‘Ginger BBQ’ van offering amazingly tasty finger licking foods.”

Maher continues: “The build up to Christmas was jump crazy as we had over 60 different stall holders each week for four weeks running.

“In total we signed up 74 new stall holders who had never exhibited with us before – particularly in the craft area.

“So to build on this we have made a decision to run a Craft market on the first Sunday of each month starting on the 6th of February 2022.

2This market is already over 70% booked out. So our focus over the year will be to bring the best range of locally produced food each Saturday with some crafts included and then a special once a month Craft fair to allow our local artists exhibit their works.

“I expect the farmers market will grow back to our normal 100% capacity by the end of January as our various stall holders come back from their well earned holidays after a hectic festive season.”

Meanwhile the infrastructural upgrading at SOLAS continues a pace with the first section of the Courtyard retractable roof being installed on the 21st of December and another two sections (there will be six in total) being installed next week.

The latest schedule is that the roof completed finished by the 22nd of January. A total of four high level gas heaters have been installed to cover seating under the new canopy.

Once the roof is fully completed this area will be totally unique – creating a warm, dry, beautiful and Covid safe dining experience.
