Intoxicated driver case as Laois road re-opens after multiple car crash

Gardaí

A driver failed a roadside intoxicant test at the scene of a multiple car crash on the N80 between Portlaoise and Mountmellick on Wednesday evening.

Road closures were in place for a while as emergency services dealt with the incident following a three-car pileup.

Though there were no reports of injuries, Gardai confirmed that one driver failed an intoxicant test and the case is now being processed.

The incident follows a busy couple of days for local gardai who made eight arrests over Easter weekend for drink/drug driving offences.

“They will now face fines, court prosecution and possible disqualification from driving,” said Laois-Offaly Gardai in a statement.

“When you take risks on the road, you risk your life and the lives of all other road users.

“Please never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“The consequences of drink/drug driving and/or speed can be totally devestating.

“One poor decision could have life changing results for you and others.

“Please always drive with care and consideration and help save lives.

“Never ever drive while under the influence.”
