Three Portlaoise employees have raised almost €16,000 in aid of Midlands Down Syndrome Centre following a marathon cycle.

Conor McGarry, David Phelan and Johan Erasmus all work for Powerpoint Engineering in Portlaoise.

Stradbally native Sean Conlon works with the trio and he inspired them to take on a mammoth fundraising cycle.

Starting last Friday, the lads took on a 575km cycle from Malin Head in Donegal to Slea Head in the Dingle Peninsula.

They left Malin Head early on Friday morning and took on a 195km cycle to Strandhill in Sligo where they stayed overnight.

On Saturday morning, they will left Strandhill and traveled 191km through the rugged mountains of Connemara and finished at Rosaveel port in Galway where they got the evening ferry across to Innis Oir, the smallest of the Aran Islands.

After an overnight stay on Innis Oir, they took a ferry on Sunday morning to Doolin in Clare.

From Doolin, the lads set out on the final leg of their journey, finishing 190km later on Sunday evening at Ireland’s most westerly point, overlooking the Blasket Islands at Slea Head on the Dingle peninsula.

The lads say: “Down Syndrome Centre is an incredible Irish charity and is Ireland’s first services-led centre for children with Down Syndrome aged 18 and under and their families.

“Helping children with Down Syndrome to reach their full potential in a positive manner, they provide vital family focussed services throughout Ireland with centres in Portlaoise, Cork and Monaghan.

“We are very grateful for all the support to date including a special message from our colleague Sean who is our Special Olympian.

“Please support this very worthy charity at the link below, every cent counts!”
