Laois groups encouraged to apply as funding announced for Women’s Sheds

A Women's and Men's Shed group meet up

New funding of €100,000 to support Women’s Sheds across Ireland and Laois groups have been encouraged to apply.

So says Laois TD Sean Fleming who is encouraging women to take part in big numbers like their male counterparts.

Deputy Fleming: “We are seeing an increase in the number of Women’s Sheds across Ireland.

“The Idea of the Women’s Sheds is to allow women to connect with others, socialise and share skills and interests while having this safe place to meet.

“We have seen the popularity and increase in the number of Men’s Shed in our communities and I look forward to seeing the Women’s Sheds achieve the same success.

“The Women’s Shed currently does not have a national representative body and for the reason it has been more difficult to get State support.

“The grants which will be in the region of €1,000 – €2,000 can be used to assist Women’s Sheds to expand within their communities, to run activities or to help them with their running costs such as insurance or rental costs.

“I am calling on Women’s Sheds and interested groups in Laois to apply and avail of this funding.

“This is a new opportunity and I look forward to a significant number of applications coming from County Laois.”

All interested groups can get in contact with the Department of Rural and Community Development via womenssheds@drcd.gov.ie.
