Warning issued as ‘people impersonating Gardai’ are scamming the elderly in Laois

Garda General new new

People are being warned to be vigilant as cases of people impersonating Gardai and then scamming elderly and vulnerable people have been reported.

The issue has been reported in Rosenallis and Clonaslee already this year.

And it came up again at Monday’s meeting of the Joint Policing Committee.

Sinn Fein Councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley told how elderly people were being scammed by this.

Chief Superintendent John Scanlan said: “Yes it is true that this has happened in Laois.

“There is more than one criminal group engaging in this activity too.

“The advice we have for elderly and vulnerable is not to admit someone into your house without them properly identifying themselves.

“We have serious concerns that these people are entering homes, searching them and stealing from them.”
