The week that was: Our most read stories of the past seven days

1 – ‘Are they more important in Portlaoise than out the country?’

News that Laois County Council won’t be providing footpath/cycle lanes from two Laois villages to the nearby GAA grounds was met with considerable frustration at the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District meeting this week.

Cllr PJ Kelly had asked for an update on a potential footpath from the Killenard national school to the O’Dempsey’s GAA pitch, something had been proposed and seconded at a meeting in September of last year.

2 – Portlaoise Ladies announce withdrawal from Leinster as vote sees minor fixture clash remain

Portlaoise Ladies withdrew from the Leinster senior club championship and did not fulfill Sunday afternoon’s match with Longford Slashers.

The decision came following a meeting of the Laois LGFA on Friday night in the Killeshin Hotel.

3 – In Pictures: All smiles as Portlaoise claim Premier IHC glory and return to Senior

There were great celebrations as Portlaoise claimed the Premier IHC title in style on Sunday afternoon in O’Moore Park.

Tommy Fitzgerald’s charges scored four unanswered points at the start of the first half and another five at the start of the second which was ultimately the difference in the end.

4 – In Pictures: Emotional scenes and wild celebrations as Colt-Shanahoe claim Premier IHC glory

History was made in O’Moore Park on Saturday night as Colt-Shanahoe were crowned Intermediate champions.

It was their first championship title since the two clubs amalgamated back in 2020.

5 – In Pictures: World Champion Irish dancer Ronan honoured at civic reception

A 20-year-old Crettyard-based world champion Irish dancer was honoured at a civic reception hosted by Laois County Council on Thursday last.

Ronan Brennan is originally from the UK, but has been living in Crettyard for the last 16 years.

He is currently a full-time student at SETU Carlow, studying bioscience with biopharmaceuticals.

6 – In Pictures: All smiles in Raheen and Shanahoe as Colt-Shanahoe bring IHC cup home

There were great scenes in Raheen and Shanahoe during the week as the victorious Colt-Shanahoe team brought the IHC cup home.

Schools are always a great source of entertainment and it was no different in Tobar an Léinn and Scoil Fionntáin Naofa.

7 – Maher, Hassett and Dunne confirmed as top scorers in 2023 hurling championships

With the 2023 Laois hurling championships coming to a dramatic end, we look back at the top scoring clubs and players across the grades.

Camross defeated Abbeyleix in the senior final, with both Tomás Keyes and Eoghan Fennelly finishing high on the scoring carts.

8 – New Digital Hub to be developed at old Courthouse building in Borris-in-Ossory

Laois County Council are in the process of adapting the former courthouse building and site in Borris-In-Ossory, to form a new digital hub.

An architect-led design team was appointed by the council in  2022, while renovation plans for the Courthouse were officially unveiled in March this year.

9 – Laois senior hurling management team confirmed ahead of 2024 season

The management team for the Laois senior hurlers has been confirmed for the 2024 season.

There are several changes to Willie Maher’s backroom team from 2023 with just Ballinakill’s Eamon Jackman remaining in the role of coach/selector.

10 – Illegal dumping continues to raise the ire of Laois Councillors

Illegal dumping continues to be a blight on our our beautiful county, with the issue raising the ire of local Councillors yet again.

Cllr Seamus McDonald raised the motion at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District meeting this week.
