1 – Legendary rock group AC/DC to perform rare intimate gig in Laois

The April fools joke that had everyone talking this week as LaoisToday broke the news of AC/DC’s upcoming gig in Laois.

A considerable amount of people, not just in Laois, but around the country were taken in by our “story” of Brian Johnson, Angus Young and the boys playing a rare intimate gig in Mountmellick’s 450-seat Arts Centre.

2 – One of Ireland’s largest pub groups set to take over prominent Portlaoise bar

One of Ireland’s largest pub groups is set to take over a prominent bar in Portlaoise which recently closed down.

The name ‘Nanny Kelly’s’ appeared over the door of the former Lilly’s Bar & Kitchen this week – which closed in February.

3 – Weekend Read: Laois artist draws on local scenes for inspiration

Spending summers as a child going around with her maternal grandad, Jim Tyrell, the well known Portlaoise vet, engendered a love of animals in artist Karen Fingleton.

With her dad coming from a farm outside Stradbally where the family spend lots of time, it’s small wonder that cows are a favourite subject in her paintings.

The Laois senior hurlers concluded their National League Division 2A campaign in style last Sunday.

It completed a magical weekend for Laois fans as the footballers defeated Leitrim in Croke Park in the Division 4 final the day before.

The late David Brown was remembered by a huge crowd at a community event in Portlaoise GAA’s ground at Rathleague on Easter Sunday.

David died on Easter Sunday last year following a quad bike accident at the age of 15.

The full match report as Laois were crowned National Football League Division 4 champions, crushing Leitrim in Croke Park on Saturday evening.

Laois led by four points at half time but kicked on massively in the second half to win by 14 in the end.

Laois completed an amazing double last weekend as they added hurling glory to the list.

9 – In Pictures: Presentation made as long-serving Laois organist and choir founder retires

Phil Farrell, Audrey Whelan, Mary Fallon and Veronica Kearns

The St Joseph’s Sunday Choir made presentations to the retiring organist, Audrey Whelan, at a function in the Hollow Bar in Mountmellick recently.

Audrey’s family and most of the choir were present at the event which took place last Saturday, March 23.

With the 2024 GAA season underway in Laois, club players, managers and officials are back in the thick of it once again.

On the field the action has restarted in recent weeks and will pick up pace with a full club league programme all the way down through the grades.
