A fundraiser has been launched in aid of a Laois mother who is awaiting a heart transplant.

Denise Geoghegan from Portarlington has found herself in bad health and in now active on the heart transplant list.

The mam of three, who is married to husband Emmet, has been in hospital for the last seven weeks and will remain in hospital until she gets the transplant.

Up until her illness, Denise and her husband both worked but now her friend Mary Mulhall is looking for financial help to support her family for travel expenses and household bills.

Mary said: “Denise’s husband will have to take time off work to look after their three kids and Denise.

“I can’t stress enough that at this time Denise and family do not need this additional stress.

“Any help you can give will be gratefully appreciated by Denise and her family. Please share this with everyone you know.”

Denise and her family are extremely well known in Portarlington and are heavily involved in GAA.

Denise’s brothers Steven and Evan Lyons both play for Portarlington seniors while so too does son Curtis.

Younger sons Corey and Caeden also play football with Corey captaining Portarlington to their first ever Feile title last year.

The fundraiser was launched yesterday and already almost €5,000 has been raised.

Anyone wishing to help, can do so here.
