Your guide to what’s on in Laois this weekend

There’s tonnes of action this Halloween/bank holiday weekend.

So whether you’re into discos, pumpkin patches or fun runs, there’s something for everyone this spooky weekend.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27

Debs Night in aid of Down Syndrome

There is a Debs night in association with Down Syndrome Ireland Laois branch in the Manor Hotel, Abbeyleix. Starting at 7.30pm, this is sure to be a great night for those who may never have experienced a Debs.

Mountmellick Camera Club Exhibition

Mountmellick Camera Club are having their annual exhibition in Mountmellick Community School at 7.30pm.

Table Quiz in Portlaoise

A table quiz in aid of Team Hope Shoe Box appeal will be held in Kavanagh’s Pub, Portlaoise, at 8pm.

Reginald D Hunter in Portlaoise

Comedian Reginald D Hunter is performing in the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Tickets are available here. 

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28

Pumpkin Garden in Portarlington

The Pumpkin Garden, Portlarlington will be open from 2pm to 8pm. The Garden is beside A & S Meats on Main Street and will be serving free teas, coffees and hot chocolates.

Halloween Art Workshop in Abbeyleix

The Heritage House, Abbeyleix, are holding a fantasically spooky Halloween art workshop for those aged 7-10 from 10am until noon.

Fancy Dress Night for The Rock GAA

Get your costumes out. The Rock GAA Club are having a Halloween fancy dress night in Turley’s, Mountmellick.

* As a mark of respect for the late Tom Flynn, the Rock GAA Club Halloween Fancy Dress charity event has been cancelled.

Haloween Teen Disco in Portarlington

Arlington AFC juveniles are holding a Halloween disco in Port Rugby club from 4pm to 6pm.

Halloween in Portarlington Golf Club

There’s a Halloween party in Portarlington Golf Club at 9pm.

Lip Sync

The Emo GAA Lip Sync fundraiser takes place in the Midlands Park Hotel from 7pm.

Local GAA

On the GAA front, the Emo footballers and Trumera hurlers are both in Leinster championship action while there is a number of U-21 hurling and football games down for decision. You can see the full list of fixtures here. 

Soccer action

On the local soccer scene, there is FAI Cup action for the Portlaoise AFC U-17 team as well as and FAI interleague game for the CCFL selection. All the fixtures are here. 

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29

Vintage and Classic Motor Show

The centenary of the Ford motor company in Ireland is being celebrated at the Indoor Vintage and Classic Motor Show in the Laois Shopping Centre. All cars on display are over 30 years old and the event is organised by the Laois Ballinakill Vintage and Classic Owners Club and is supported by Laois Shopping Centre and Downey’s Autostop Ford dealers. The event gets underway at 1pm and is in the underground section of Laois Shopping Centre.

Errill Tractor Run

Errill Tractor Run takes place this Sunday in Errill Village at 1pm in aid OF Billy’s Recovery & Laois Palliative Care.  Registration from 12pm, €20 per tractor. Kiddies Tractor Run commences at 12 noon,  for €2 your child could be in with a chance to win a toy tractor kindly donated by Templetuohy Farm  Machinery. Refreshments, including BBQ & Music by Paul O’Brien & The Dooley Brothers afterwards in Ray’s Bar.

Ghost Train Ride in Stradbally

Spookiness awaits with a Ghost Train ride for the whole family in the dark Stradbally Woodland Railway area from 4pm to 8pm.

6km Fun Run in Shanahoe

Shanahoe GAA are holding their annual 6km Fun Run for Down Syndrome Ireland. The adult run starts at 11.30am and the juvenile 1km run begins at 11am. You can read more about that here.

Stradbally Fancy Dress

Stradbally GAA are holding a Halloween fancy dress night in Rams bar, Stradbally from 8pm.

Rosenallis Auction

Rosenallis GAA are holding their 10th Annual Auction in Rosenallis Community Centre. Starting from 1pm, there will be something for everyone at this event.

Coolrain Annual Vintage Run

The Coolrain annual Vintage Run takes place at Sheeran’s pub, Coolrain at 12pm.

Ridge of Capard Walk

Calling all walking lovers, the Catholes/Ridge of Capard 10km begins at the Catholes car park at 11am.

Rambling House Session

There’s a Rambling House session in An Sean Chistin at 7.30pm.

Club GAA action

The Portlaoise footballers are in Leinster club championship action against Rhode of Offaly in Tullamore. All the weekend’s GAA fixtures are here

Basketball road trip

The Portlaoise Panthers ladies basketball team have had a tough start to the season in the national Super League and they’re away to leaders UCC Glanmire in Cork at 1pm.

The Portlaoise Panthers men’s team are also away to the leaders, again against Cork opposition, though in their case it’s against Neptune. Tip off in that one is at 7pm and we are hoping to bring you Snapchat coverage of that one.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 30

Pumpkin Carving Competition

Do you think you can carve a pumpkin better than the rest of them? Take the challenge at the Pumpkin Carving competition at Tae Lane, Durrow.
