Anger over state of derelict buildings in Portlaoise

Homeless Laois families will soon be housed in hotels one Councillor has warned

Owners of empty Portlaoise Main Street properties who have let them become “eye-sores”, have been condemned.

Cllr Noel Tuohy wants the owners of these to be forced to improve them.

He said: “All the hard work by residents, and these eyesores take the look off it. They should be ashamed of themselves.”

His had a motion on this at the January meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

Here, he called on the council to request that the owners of unused properties are all now being contacted.

Town Manager Kieren Kehoe said: “Commitment has been given regarding an upgrade. We have identified others.

We are finding it better to engage directly with them.”
