It’s fair to say the Brigidine Convent was something of an institution in Mountrath, with the Brigidine Sisters having an association with the town that goes back over 200 years.

Photographer Alf Harvey was on hand to capture their reunion event in 2004, which took place every two years.

The event was organised by the Brigidine Past Pupils Committee.

A short AGM was held before the guests took a tour of the grounds.

The school ceased existence after it the amalgamated with Ballyfin College and Mountrath Vocational School in 2010 to form Mountrath CS.

However, it is fair to say that it has left a lasting impression.

One of its most famous graduates, RTE’s Claire Byrne went there. She cites how she was encouraged to pursue journalism by her teacher Mary Holden, and the rest, as they say, is history.

For those who attended the highly-regarded school, there are many fond memories.

In fact, LaoisToday ran an article recalling the halcyon days of the school – with our piece 20 things you’ll remember if you went to the Brigidine in Mountrath.
