Get your gears going for the Laois Down Syndrome Ireland Tractor Run

Calling all tractor, car and vintage enthusiasts – the Laois branch of Down Syndrome Ireland are holding their annual Tractor Run on Sunday, September 16 in Ballacolla.

The Tractor Run is in aid of their ‘Field of Dreams’ project. The Laois branch of Down Syndrome Ireland saw their dreams come through when they were allotted four acres of land for their ‘Field of Dreams’ earlier this month.

Abbeyleix will be the site for the ‘Field of Dreams’ and will be used as a sheltered employment training centre of excellence for adult members of Laois Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI).

There is a ‘use it or lose it’ clause to the lease, followed by a 25-year lease if used thereafter.

PRO of the Laois Down Syndrome Ireland branch, Michael Gorman, is extremely excited about the upcoming project.

“This project is an opportunity for our adults to play a meaningful role in our community here in Laois in terms of paid employment as well as providing other vital Services and supports that will enhance our ‘Cradle to Grave Philosophy’ – providing these services and supports throughout the life cycle of our members.

“So please come along and support us to make a physical difference to the mental health and well-being of our adult population in Laois by giving them a reason to get up in the morning through meaningful paid employment in the county,” he added.

Laois DSI made a PowerPoint presentation to the full chamber of Laois County Council in May 2017 and received huge support from all county councillors present.

They are now hoping for the same support from members of the public to help finance the project.

There will be music in the Hawthorn Lounge afterwards with food and raffles for exciting prizes taking place also.

To enter the Tractor and Vehicle run, contact Mick or Margaret on 086 0491633 or 087 9434607 respectively.
