Stunning Laois creation set to appear at Junk Kouture Grand Final on RTE 2

Junk Kouture Mountrath

The Junk Kouture Grand Final will air on RTE on Thursday night – and three Laois girls are going for glory.

Chloe Coss, Fial Dalton and Ellen Rowney of Mountrath Community School have reached the showpiece which airs at 7pm tomorrow on RTE 2.

The colourful ensemble ‘Alarming Twists’ is intended to reflect the enormous impact of the pandemic on people’s lives.

Indeed, they have already been successful as they were announced as the 2021 Enterprise Award Winner in advance of the show.

The Junk Kouture competition aims to unleash the creative brilliance of young people, challenging them to create and model high-end couture from everyday junk. All materials must be recycled or repurposed and new materials are prohibited.

Alarming Twists has a psychedelic flare trousers which are a homage to fashion icons and were crocheted from old alarm cables found in sheds.

The top is a corset-style garment adorned with miniature daisies and was crocheted using clear plastic vegetable bags, which the students cleaned, cut and twisted into yarn.

A multi-coloured ombre cape reflects a blooming flower meadow and was created by crocheting over 300 individual flowers from the alarm wire and tying them together with copper wire.

More flowers are incorporated in a headpiece, with a crown of coloured spikes made from melted strips of plastic. These are attached to a base of bottle bottoms, to give the headpiece a tiered effect.

The shoes are embellished with plaited copper wire and match the dainty copper flower necklace.

RTÉ 2fm presenters Laura Fox and Emma Power return host the 2021 grand final on Thursday, December 9 at 7pm only on RTÉ 2 and the RTÉ Player.
