Community Groups from Laois were delighted to benefit from a “Free Native Irish Tree Give Away”, as part of National Tree Week 2024.

This Climate Action Event was organised by Laois Public Participation Networks (PPN) in collaboration with Portlaoise Tidy Towns and Trees on the Land.

The “Free Native Irish Tree Give Away”, took place during National Tree week on Saturday, March 9 outside the Laois PPN Office, in Leister Square Portlaoise.

Brian Gaynor of Trees on the Land guided Community Groups through the wide variety of Native Irish Trees that were available and the most suitable trees for their location.

Vincent Booth, Chairperson Portlaoise Tidy Towns said: “This is the second year we have held the native Irish tree giveaway in collaboration with Laois PPN and Brian Gaynor , Trees on the land.

“As in previous years there was a great response from community groups across Laois. This event is part of our climate action project and hopefully we will now make it an annual event.

“It is heartening to see communities willing to do their bit to counteract climate change and improve biodiversity within their locality.

“Thanks again to everyone who volunteered their time on the day and remember every action no matter how small will have a positive impact.”

After collecting their trees attendees were treated to a complementary warm coffee and delicious, sweet treat from local business Caffé Latte.

Dan Bergin, Laois PPN Co-Ordinator said: “It was wonderful to see Community Groups from across the County benefit from our Free Native Irish Tree Give Away.

“This event was part of Laois PPN’s Climate Action Project. Tree planting is seen as one of the most effective tools to combat climate change and restore biodiversity.

“Laois PPN wish to thank Portlaoise Tidy Towns and Trees on the Land who we collaborated with on this event.”
