The iconic Woodenbridge over the River Erkina will reopen to the public on Sunday, April 14, with the ribbon cutting ceremony at 2pm.

Laois County Council commenced upgrade works in October 2023 to bring the Woodenbridge up to Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s (TII) required standards.

It was confirmed in 2022 that the famous Woodenbridge between Ballacolla and Durrow would be maintained in its traditional, timber guise.

This followed ‘Save The Woodenbridge’ public rally held earlier that year, following proposals to replace it with a concrete structure were met with serious displeasure among local residents.

Enhancement work was also carried out on its sister bridge over the canal section.

“Bridge experts say the Woodenbridge is possible the only bridge made from timber currently carrying public traffic in Ireland,” a representative said.

“This uniqueness sets this bridge apart as a real tourism attraction.

“All locals and tourists alike are invited to attend after which light refreshments will be served.”
