Much needed Laois bus service gone to tender

In April of this year, the news broke that the JJ Kavanagh’s bus route from Dublin to Limerick serving Borris-in-Ossory, Mountrath and Castletown would no longer stop and collect from these locations.

It was revealed that they would stop servicing Borris-in-Ossory, Castletown and Mountrath.

There was initial shock and dismay at the decision, however good news has come since this announcement.

Local link Laois-Offaly have provided bus service between the towns and villages of Roscrea, Borris-in-Ossory, Pike of Rushall, Castletown. Mountrath and Portlaoise.

The bus route, known as the 834, travels three times a day from Roscrea to Portlaoise and vice-versa, seven days a week.

However the office for Laois TD Brian Stanley have stated that this is only a temporary service, and that the service on this route is now at tendering stage – expected to commence in August.

In a statement, Deputy Stanley said: The reply I received from the NTA states Local link Laois Offaly are currently tendering for the #834 Roscrea Portlaoise contracted service, which incorporates additional evening service and morning service on the new route.

“The new timetable is expected to commence in August, subject to the successful completion of the contractual process.

“While I welcome this update, I am looking for the full service to be restored on this route. I am in constant contact with the NTA about this and will continue to do so,” he concluded.
