    1 – Laois owned and trained horse scoops big prize at Listowel Races

    The Listowel Racing Festival took place last weekend in Kerry and a horse that is owned and trained in Laois was victorious.

    Ballyglass Beauty galloped to glory in the 3.15pm Devon Hill Handicap Hurdle.

    2 – Councillors fume over proposal to construct 13, 180 metre high wind turbines in rural Laois

    Several Laois County Councillors voiced their total opposition to a proposal which would see 13 wind turbines constructed in a rural part of the county.

    The issue arose at a recent meeting of the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District.

    3 – Calls for a roundabout at Laois junction as ‘cars routinely ending up in the garden of a house’

    A call has been made for a roundabout to be constructed at a Laois junction which is currently “resulting in many accidents.”

    Fine Gael Councillor PJ Kelly brought forward the motion in relation to Killenure Cross which is between Portarlington and Monasterevin.

    4 – Laois man, elected new Irish Road Haulage President, to focus on sustainability and road safety

    Having recently been elected as the new President of the Irish Road Haulage Association, Laois man, Ger Hyland has said he will be focused on sustainability and road safety in his new position.

    Mr Hyland, from Rosenallis, was speaking to LaoisToday about his goals and aspirations in this hugely important national role.

    5 – Laois man offering a welcome base for Irish supporters during Rugby World Cup in France

    Rugby World Cup fever has certainly gripped France as the competition enters its second week and the host country are riding the crest of a wave following their opening round win over New Zealand.

    Thousands of Irish supporters have made their way to France for the tournament and in the beautiful port city of La Rochelle, a Laois man who owns and runs his own pub is proving to be a very popular host.

    Arsenal and Italian international central midfielder, Jorginho, has pledged his support for Rosenallis’ Tractor Draw.

    7 – Laois SFC: Swayne the hero as Portlaoise strike last to defeat O’Dempsey’s and reach semis

    Portlaoise made it through to the semi finals of the Laois SFC after they edged past O’Dempsey’s in a titanic struggle last weekend.

    Kevin Fitzpatrick’s men were thankful to a late Kevin Swayne strike which ultimately settled a ding-dong battle in their favour.

    8 – In Pictures: Rain fails to dampen spirits as crowds flock to Day 1 of the Ploughing Championships

    A crowd of almost 70,000 people braved the wind and rain to come to Ratheniska on Tuesday for Day 1 of the Ploughing Championships.

    Despite inclement weather conditions, the crowd ploughed on in lively spirits.

    9 – Laois SFC: Doyle the hero as St Joseph’s eventually see off Emo to reach semi finals

    St Joseph’s joined Portlaoise in the semi finals of the Laois SFC with a late winner last weekend.

    Substitute Dylan Doyle was their hero as his goal in injury time proved the winning strike to see off Emo in O’Moore Park.

    10 – Several Laois Credit Unions facing serious reduction in opening hours

    Durrow, Mountrath, and Rathdowney credit unions are facing a drastic reduction in the number of days they will be open for business.

    As things currently stand, the opening times for each credit union will soon be reduced by over 30%.
