1 – Sinn Fein Local Election team reduced as announced candidate confirms withdrawal

Sinn Fein’s team to contest the Local Elections in Laois this summer has been reduced by the withdrawal of a candidate who had been confirmed to run.

Mountrath native Julie Maguire, who was confirmed as a candidate by the party in December, will not be on the ballot paper.

Two students from Portlaoise CBS were crowned the overall winners at the Laois Student Enterprise Awards on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnny Phelan and David Reddin impressed the judges with their business ‘Steady Wine’.

Laois County Council has encouraged people interested in the Domestic Waste Water Treatment (septic tank) scheme to contact the Council’s Environment Section to register their interest.

Mr Simon Walton, Director of Services said: “I know there are people out there who have concerns regarding their domestic waste water treatment systems.

Portlaoise College has announced that six of its students have been awarded full Gaeltacht scholarships for this upcoming summer.

The recipients include fifth-year students James Buggy-McDonald, Abi Dixon, and Thomas Fitzpatrick, third-year students Hanna Piotrowska, Marija Goncarenko and Emilija Siugzdinyte.

Justin McNulty’s charges maintained their lead at the summit of the table and are almost guaranteed promotion with games against Leitrim and Waterford to come.

The Laois Shopping Centre ACFL Division 3 season gets underway this weekend with teams across three different championship grades set to battle it out over the coming months.

Last season’s eventual intermediate champions Ballylinan endured a difficult spring which ended with league relegation from ACFL Division 2 – as they made the drop along with senior side Clonaslee-St Manman’s.
